Jakarta Civil Registry Office Reveals 3 Reasons for Decline in New Migrants

The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) DKI Jakarta, through its Civil Registry and Population Administration Office (Disdukcapil) DKI Jakarta, has recorded a trend of declining numbers of new migrants to the capital following Eid al-Fitr 2026.

Head of Disdukcapil DKI Jakarta, Denny Wahyu Haryanto, revealed three main factors influencing this situation.

“This declining trend is possibly due to three factors,” said Denny when contacted on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

Currently, several regions have established industrial centres capable of absorbing labour, meaning people no longer need to come to Jakarta to seek employment.

“In some areas, industrial centres have been created so that economic growth is beginning to spread evenly,” Denny stated.

The second factor is the changing mindset of the public towards Jakarta.

As Jakarta transforms into a global capital, the need for competencies and skills is increasingly high.

This condition makes prospective migrants realise that living in Jakarta cannot rely solely on boldness, but requires adequate abilities to survive.

“To live in Jakarta, it’s not just about being bold but having skills so that one can adapt quickly in Jakarta,” he said.

Due to the lack of certainty in accommodation, many regional residents choose to postpone their arrival.

They wait for certainty on whether they will stay with family, relatives, or in rented accommodation.

Nevertheless, Denny emphasised that the data on the number of migrants this year will continue to fluctuate.

His office is still awaiting the results of the recapitulation of population administration services, which run until 25 April 2026.
