Jakarta City Hall Reactivates Waste Station to Strengthen Waste Sorting Culture

The Jakarta Provincial Government has reactivated a waste collection facility at City Hall as a concrete step to strengthen the culture of sorting waste at the source. The reactivation of the facility is the result of collaboration between the Bureau of General Affairs and the Regional Secretariat of DKI Jakarta Province and Rekosistem to promote more responsible, modern, and sustainable waste management within the government environment. “This Waste Station serves as a learning tool to encourage civil servants and the public to get into the habit of sorting waste from the source,” said Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, in Jakarta on Friday. According to Dudi, the reactivation of the facility is not merely about providing infrastructure, but is part of an effort to build collective awareness. He stressed that the success of waste management cannot rely solely on the government, but requires collaboration from all parties. Therefore, synergy between regional apparatuses, collaborating partners, and the community is key to building a better waste management ecosystem. Meanwhile, CEO and Co-Founder of Rekosistem, Ernest Layman, said that his company currently operates 40 recycling stations, one of which is at City Hall. “Other locations are in public places across Jakarta, such as Dukuh Atas MRT Station and Blok M MRT Station,” he said. The waste station is an initiative to collect post-consumer inorganic waste. Ernest conveyed that innovation in waste management in Jakarta must be carried out more quickly and on a larger scale, with support from the public. “It cannot just be the government pushing; the public must also be willing to participate in programmes that have been designed, whether by the government, producers, or technology companies,” he said.
