Jakarta chilli and onion prices jump as red chilli posts the biggest rise
Jakarta, Kompas.com - Prices of chillies and onions in Jakarta rose in the second week of May 2026. The highest increase occurred in red chilli peppers, which now reach Rp 80,000 per kilogram. The Head of the Jakarta Provincial Food Security, Maritime Affairs and Agriculture Service (KPKP), Hasudungan A. Sidabalok, said the price rise was influenced by heavy rainfall in chilli and onion producing areas. Based on monitoring in the second week of May 2026, red chilli price rose the most, by 12.12 per cent or Rp 8,689 per kg. The price of red chilli rose from Rp 71,664 to Rp 80,354 per kg. The price of red onions also rose by 3.96 per cent or Rp 2,082 per kg, from Rp 52,615 to Rp 54,697 per kg. Meanwhile, the price of red chilli (TW) rose by 3.84 per cent or Rp 2,306 per kg, from Rp 60,069 to Rp 62,375 per kg. The price of green chilli also rose by 3.05 per cent or Rp 1,773 per kg, from Rp 58,166 to Rp 59,939 per kg. Weather conditions also reduced harvest quality and made plants more susceptible to pests and diseases. “The Jakarta provincial Department of Food Security, Maritime Affairs and Agriculture, in line with its duties and functions, conducts routine monitoring for strategic food commodities. The horticultural commodities included in the category of strategic foods are chillies and onions,” said Hasudungan. “Ahead of the National Religious Holiday (HBKN) Idul Adha there is an increase in market demand, causing an increase in prices of chilli and onion commodities,” Hasudungan said.
