Jakarta Central Police Arrest Two Suspects in Kemayoran Beating Incident

Jakarta Central Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a beating incident in Kemayoran early on Sunday (24/5).

“There are two suspects, identified as SS (26) and ASA (23),” said Jakarta Central Police Criminal Investigation Unit Chief, AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He added that the assault went viral on social media, occurring at Jalan Bungur Besar Raya, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, around 3.15am on Sunday (24/5).

Roby explained that the case was uncovered through proactive police cyber patrols, with officers discovering amateur video footage showing a group engaging in violence on the street.

“We acted swiftly. Through digital footprint tracking, CCTV footage around the crime scene, and witness statements, the victim’s identity was confirmed,” he said.

After identifying the victim, officers requested the victim visit the police station to file an official report.

Investigations revealed the incident involved a group of four suspects, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“The victim’s companion intended to intervene in the altercation but was pulled and punched by suspects SS and ASA. When the victim tried to assist their friend, they were also assaulted by the perpetrators,” he explained.

The two suspects surrendered after police conducted intensive searches and mobilised community policing posts and local community leaders. Through this approach, police appealed to respected elders in the suspects’ neighbourhood to encourage cooperation.

“Thanks to these efforts, the suspects voluntarily surrendered to Jakarta Central Police early Tuesday (26/5),” he said.

They face charges under Article 262 of Law No. 1 of 2023 on collective violence (group assault), which carries a maximum prison sentence of five to seven years depending on the severity of the victim’s injuries. Police are currently conducting further investigation and awaiting medical examination results.
