JAKARTA - Deputy Chair of the Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) DKI Jakarta, Ima Mahdiah, stated that the council will strictly monitor the implementation of the Domestic Workers Protection Law (UU PPRT).

This measure is driven by the high demand for domestic workers (PRT) in the capital, making Jakarta one of the primary destinations for domestic workers in Indonesia.

Ima noted that this step also aligns with the momentum of Kartini Day, which promotes the protection, safety, and welfare of women.

She assessed that firm legal protection is greatly needed because the conditions of domestic workers in the field remain vulnerable to injustice.

“There are domestic workers who might luckily have good employers, but there are also those whose salaries are withheld or similar issues. And for this, the DPRD urges or supports our executive to create derivative regulations from that Law,” said Ima.

“Of course, there will be pros and cons with any regulation, especially in Jakarta where the need for PRT is the highest in Indonesia. But with that, we must listen to both sides. Later, we can find a middle ground, so that it’s comfortable for the employers and also for the PRT. So we seek a win-win solution like that,” she explained.

Previously reported, the DPR officially enacted the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) into law during a plenary session on Tuesday (21/4/2026).

The decision was made after the Chair of the Legislation Body (Baleg) of the DPR, Bob Hasan, presented the discussion report on the bill, which was then handed over to DPR Chair Puan Maharani and Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas.

“Has the time come for me to request approval from the factions regarding the Domestic Workers Protection Bill, whether it can be approved to be enacted as a Law?” Puan asked during the session.

Puan described the enactment of the UU PPRT as a historic milestone for workers in the domestic sector.

“Alhamdulillah, after 22 years of struggle, today the UU PPRT has been enacted. This becomes a historic milestone for friends working in the domestic sector,” said Puan in a written statement.

According to her, the state is obliged to provide legal certainty and protection to all workers, including PRT who have been in the informal sector.

Puan added that the employment relationship between PRT and employers is now restructured to be more formal with a clear legal basis, without eliminating familial values.
