Jakarta Becomes the Safest City, Legislator: Needs Continuous Improvement
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Wa Ode Herlina, stated that the Global Residence Index report placing Jakarta as one of the safest cities in Southeast Asia is something to be grateful for, but it needs to be continuously improved. “We are very pleased (with the achievement of becoming the safest city), but it must be continuously improved,” said Wa Ode in Jakarta on Tuesday. According to the report, Jakarta’s achievement is driven by various factors, from the integration of public transport, digitalisation of services, strengthening of public spaces, to efforts in controlling urban risks. She assessed that under the leadership of the Governor and Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung and Rano Karno, Jakarta’s transformation towards a global city continues with a more inclusive, safe, and sustainable approach. However, the development of public transport in Jakarta still needs to focus on improving inter-route connectivity as well as expanding access to residential areas. This input has also been conveyed to the public during the socialisation of the Regional Regulation, particularly regarding the need for transport service integration so that it can be more easily accessed by low-income communities (MBR). She exemplified the importance of strengthening the feeder transport network like JakLingko in residential areas, so that residents no longer have to rely on private vehicles or other transport to reach main stops or stations. For example, from Kemayoran to SMA 1, it is still not fully connected, so residents still have to use other transport. “If JakLingko is increased, it will be much easier and more comfortable,” she said. In addition to daily connectivity, Wa Ode also emphasised the importance of adding public transport fleets during certain moments such as sports matches and concerts. Because, she said, increasing services during major events will further encourage the public to switch to public transport. In the integrated transport system, services like Transjakarta become one of the backbones of Jakarta residents’ mobility. Furthermore, Wa Ode encouraged Transjakarta to continue improving comfort, accessibility, and travel efficiency. It is known that Jakarta occupies the second position as the safest city in Southeast Asia in 2026 based on the Global Residence Index report, with a security score of 0.72. Jakarta is below Singapore which recorded a score of around 0.90, Jakarta enters the ranks of the world’s safest cities, surpassing other major cities in the region such as Bangkok (±0.65), Kuala Lumpur (±0.57), and Manila (±0.41).
