Jakarta and safety

From Neraca

Jakarta is becoming increasingly rough these days. Recently some people were killed at Senen railway terminal when the wall under which they were sheltering collapsed and crushed them. The media are full of reports about hold-ups, murders, robberies, rapes, etc. In fact, no news broadcast is complete without some crime or other. Surprisingly, people from outside Jakarta are coming to the city to try their luck.

Jakarta has obtained an Adipura medal for being clean, humane and authoritative. But in reality Jakarta is still far from that. Jakarta is tough on both newcomers and city dwellers. Hawkers and sidewalk vendors are sometimes victims of violence. They are raided, driven away from locations during law and order operations. Jakarta truly has still far to go.
