Jakarta and Milan Strengthen Cooperation in Creative Economy to Urban Food Security

The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) and the City of Milan are strengthening cooperation in the creative economy (ekraf), public arts, urban space development, and urban food security. This strengthening of cooperation was discussed in a meeting between Jakarta’s Deputy Governor Rano Karno and Milan’s Deputy Mayor Anna Scavuzzo at Milan City Hall on Tuesday (13/5), as reported in an official statement on Friday. On that occasion, Pemprov DKI Jakarta and Milan discussed plans for a public arts collaboration between artists from both cities, to be held in Jakarta in July 2026. The collaboration will feature workshops and urban art installations created jointly by Jakarta and Milan artists. This collaboration is expected to beautify Jakarta’s public spaces while opening opportunities for young artists to learn, exchange international experiences, and expand their global creative networks. “Jakarta wants public spaces not only to be places of transit but also spaces for interaction, creativity, and civic pride. Art must be present close to the community,” said Rano. Jakarta is also promoting museum cooperation and cultural exchanges between museums in Jakarta and the Museo delle Culture (MUDEC) to strengthen cultural education and provide international learning access for Jakarta’s young generation. In addition to arts and culture, the two cities discussed strengthening urban food security cooperation through urban farming development, food waste reduction, and more modern and efficient food distribution systems. This cooperation is expected to support Jakarta’s efforts to maintain food stability while encouraging healthier and more sustainable consumption patterns among the community. On that occasion, the City of Milan also expressed support for Jakarta’s planned participation in the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact as part of the commitment to strengthening healthy, inclusive, and sustainable urban food systems. Pemprov DKI Jakarta emphasised that every international cooperation is ensured to provide real benefits for the community, from better public spaces, creative economy opportunities for young people, strengthening of the cultural and tourism sectors, to improving the quality of life for city residents.
