The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is exploring opportunities for inter-regional cooperation with Kelantan, Malaysia, as a step to strengthen bilateral relations in various strategic sectors. One of the collaborations being prepared is the launch of a direct flight route between Jakarta and Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, stated that the launch of this route is expected to improve connectivity, expand economic opportunities, and encourage the growth of trade, investment, and tourism in both regions.

Pramono emphasized that Jakarta has appeal as a national economic center, with an agglomeration area inhabited by approximately 42 million people. This makes Jakarta a large market for the tourism, trade, and other service sectors.

On the other hand, Kelantan offers advantages in the health sector, which is considered to be an attractive alternative for the people of Jakarta. So far, Indonesians have generally preferred Penang as a destination for medical tourism. However, Pramono hopes that Kelantan can become a new and competitive option.

In addition to the economy and tourism, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is also exploring opportunities for collaboration in the fields of education and cultural preservation. One of the focuses is the development and exploration of ancient Malay manuscripts, which are an important part of the history and cultural identity of both regions.

The Menteri Besar of Kelantan, Mohd Nassuruddin Daud, appreciated the warm welcome from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and stated that the direct flight route from Kota Bharu to Jakarta will begin operating in June 2026.

“We came here to promote the State of Kelantan because starting June 16, there will be a direct flight from Kelantan to Jakarta. In addition, Kelantan is also known for having many Islamic boarding schools and religious schools,” he said.

The meeting between officials from Jakarta and Kelantan is expected to be the foundation for broader and more sustainable cooperation, with mutual benefits for both regions.

“This meeting is expected to be the first step in establishing sustainable collaboration between Jakarta and Kelantan in various sectors,” said Mohd Nassuruddin.
