Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Jakarta Provincial Government and Bekasi City Government have agreed to extend their cooperation in managing the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) for the next five years.

“We must manage the waste problem together. Hopefully, this cooperation will have a positive impact on both regions, including over the next five years,” Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said at City Hall on Monday.

Pramono said the cooperation covers environmental management, health, education and social affairs, as well as the construction of public facilities and infrastructure, including roads, drainage channels and disaster-management facilities.

Implementation will be reinforced through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which will set out priority programmes and provide a basis for joint monitoring and evaluation.

Jakarta currently generates more than 9,000 tonnes of waste a day, Pramono said.

To reduce its dependence on Bantargebang, the Jakarta Provincial Government is changing its waste-management approach by strengthening sorting and processing at source.

The initiative is supported by Governor’s Instruction No. 5 of 2026 on the movement to sort and process waste at source.

Alongside sorting, the Jakarta Provincial Government is developing facilities to turn waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) in Rorotan and Bantargebang, and plans to build facilities that will convert waste into electricity.

Pramono acknowledged, however, that dealing with the long-standing waste piles at Bantargebang remained a challenge requiring a joint solution.

“If everything goes smoothly, we hope the waste problem can be handled better. The challenge we must consider together is the waste that has accumulated at Bantargebang for a long time,” Pramono said.

Under the renewed agreement, the two local governments have also set out a mechanism for compensation related to the operation of the Bantargebang site.

The 2027 compensation calculation will take into account waste volumes, the waste levy rate, conversion factors and adjustments agreed by both parties.

The compensation amount for 2028–2031 will be determined by January 2027 at the latest.

The compensation funds will be prioritised in Jakarta’s current-year regional budget for environmental control, mitigation and restoration, as well as addressing social impacts arising from the operation of the Bantargebang site.

Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono said he hoped Jakarta and Bekasi could accelerate efforts to address the old waste piles by jointly assessing appropriate technologies.

“The waste problem is a shared issue and is the responsibility of each of us. We therefore hope both regions can conduct a joint study to identify the right technology so that the accumulated waste can be dealt with more quickly,” Tri said.
