Air quality in Jakarta was recorded as unhealthy this morning. Members of the public are advised to wear masks when engaging in outdoor activities.

According to IQAir, with an update at 05:00 WIB on Friday (18/09/2026), Jakarta’s air quality was recorded at 153 points, with PM 2.5 pollutant concentrations at 59 micrograms per cubic metre. This is 11.8 times higher than the annual air quality guidelines set by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

PM 2.5 refers to fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (micrometres) found in the air, including dust, smoke, and soot. Long-term exposure to these particles is linked to premature death, particularly in individuals with chronic heart or lung diseases.

Health recommendations regarding the current air quality include wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities, closing windows to prevent dirty outdoor air from entering, and using air purifiers.

Jakarta’s air quality today was ranked as the ninth worst in Indonesia, following Palembang (339), Pontianak (254), Serpong (203), Jambi (202), South Tangerang (163), Pekanbaru (160), Bandung (159), and Tangerang (158).

Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the challenges of controlling air pollution in Jakarta are becoming increasingly complex due to the rate of urbanisation, massive urban development, and the impacts of global climate change combined with urban climate characteristics.
