The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) is recognising individuals and community organisers who consistently sort and process waste, and encourage others to care about waste, through the 2026 Jakarta Waste-Sorting and Processing Heroes programme.

Residents who have taken practical action on waste management can apply or recommend an inspiring person in their neighbourhood via jakarta.go.id/pilaholahsampahheroes from 12 to 25 October 2026.

Marulina Dewi, head of the Jakarta Communications, Informatics and Statistics Agency (Diskominfotik), said the programme is expected to encourage more residents to play a role in waste management, starting at home and in their local communities.

“Waste management requires the active participation of all sections of society. Through the 2026 Jakarta Waste-Sorting and Processing Heroes programme, we want to recognise residents’ practical actions while encouraging the consistent habit of sorting and processing waste. Big changes can begin with simple steps taken together,” Marulina Dewi said on Monday (12 October).

According to Marulina, community involvement is one of the keys to building a culture of responsible waste management.

She therefore urged Jakarta residents to use the opportunity to showcase practical action and inspire more people.

“We invite residents to register practical actions they have taken or recommend a community organiser in their neighbourhood. You do not have to wait for a major movement to bring about change. Consistently sorting and processing waste can be the start of a better environment,” she said.

Through the programme, the Jakarta Provincial Government is encouraging more community initiatives that go beyond individual habits and mobilise people to work together to protect the environment.

The 2026 Jakarta Waste-Sorting and Processing Heroes programme is open to residents with practical waste-management initiatives in two categories.

The first is community organiser: an individual who actively sorts and processes waste and is able to encourage family members, neighbours or the wider community to do the same.

The second is influencer or key opinion leader (KOL): an individual who consistently uses social media to educate the public and encourage people to sort and process waste.

In addition to sorting waste, participants are expected to carry out at least one form of waste processing, such as composting, breeding maggots to break down organic waste, producing eco-enzyme, recycling waste or using a biodigester.

Participants are also expected to run an initiative that benefits the environment. This could include encouraging families and local residents, establishing a waste-management group, providing education, reducing the volume of waste in an area or managing a waste bank.

The competition is open to the public, subject to several requirements. Participants must hold a Jakarta identity card (KTP DKI Jakarta) or live in the capital, as verified by a certificate of residence.

The registered waste-sorting and processing activity or initiative must also be located within Jakarta.

Applications must be submitted online by completing the form at www.jakarta.go.id/pilaholahsampahheroes. There is no fee to enter.

To apply:

  1. Visit www.jakarta.go.id/pilaholahsampahheroes.

  2. Complete the application form according to the instructions provided.

  3. Register the practical waste-sorting and processing actions already undertaken in the relevant category.

  4. Check that the details and information provided about the activity are accurate.

  5. Submit the application by 11.59pm Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on 25 October 2026.

By entering, participants agree that the Jakarta Provincial Government may use their registered initiatives or activities for publicity purposes.

Participants will have the chance to receive cash prizes and other gifts in recognition of their contribution to waste management.
