Jaka Tingkir Locomotive and Serayu Train Carriages Derail; No Passengers Aboard
JAKARTA — The Jaka Tingkir train locomotive and the Serayu train set derailed in the yard at Pasar Senen Station, Central Jakarta, on Friday morning, 22 May 2026. The incident was first reported by station staff around 07:42 WIB, with handling beginning at about 07:58 WIB. The Jaka Tingkir locomotive derailed on five axles, and the Serayu train set derailed on two axles. It was not immediately clear whether both derailments occurred simultaneously. The chronology and cause are still under investigation, and the National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT) has been mobilised.
Officials said there were no casualties since the two train units were not carrying passengers at the time. “Derailment or slip occurred during the shunting movement. There were no passengers aboard,” said Franoto Wibowo, Public Relations Manager for KAI Daop 1, when speaking to Kompas.com at Pasar Senen Station.
Separately, the Serayu train had been preparing to pick up passengers at Pasar Senen. It was scheduled to depart with passengers from Pasar Senen to Purwokerto at 09:30 WIB. As a result of the derailments, 11 train journeys departed from Pasar Senen were delayed to various destinations.
Franoto stated that by around 12:38 WIB the handling of the Serayu derailment had been completed. However, the Serayu did not depart. Instead, KAI operated a backup service using the Cikuray train set to cover the route.
