Jail site approved as tourist spot
CILACAP, Central Java: The Governor of Central Java, Soewardi, said the plan to develop the prison island of Nusakambangan into a tourist destination may well be realized soon.
"The Ministry of Justice has given the plan the green light," he said when visiting here last week. "Those who have never been there must imagine that Nusakambangan is just a dreadful prison."
The Central Java provincial government plans to develop Nusakambangan with the hope that big spenders traveling from Singapore to Christmas Island, and vice versa, will stop over.
Nusakambangan still exists as a well-known prison for hardcore criminals sentenced to at least five years in jail. (wah)
