Jaecoo Considers Local Production as J5 EV Demand Surges
JAKARTA - Demand for the Jaecoo J5 EV in Indonesia is reportedly surging, with the electric flagship model delivering 16,000 units in a relatively short timeframe. This surge has raised questions about whether Jaecoo will establish its own production facility in Indonesia to meet domestic demand. Currently, Jaecoo vehicles in Indonesia are assembled at PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) facilities alongside other Chinese automotive brands. “We are now expanding production capacity to meet delivery timelines for our customers. Currently, the J5’s waiting period is around three to four weeks,” said Jim Ma in North Jakarta on Sunday (24 May 2026). He added that Jaecoo aims to accelerate vehicle distribution to reduce wait times for customers. “We are working to expedite the delivery of our products to customers as quickly as possible,” Jim Ma stated. Although Jaecoo has not confirmed plans for a local factory, Jim Ma indicated that such a move is possible if demand continues to rise. “This is a major topic for Chery Indonesia. When production and demand reach a certain level, this will certainly materialise,” he added. Jaecoo, part of the Chery group, is aggressively expanding its electric vehicle market in Indonesia. In addition to the J5 EV, Jaecoo offers plug-in hybrid models such as the J7 SHS-P and J8 SHS-P ARDIS. The J5 EV is one of the most popular electric SUVs in the domestic market, offering high ground clearance and spacious interiors suited to Indonesian consumers’ needs.
