PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) served 210,468,029 customers on the Jabodetabek Commuter Line between January and July 2026. This figure represents a 6.39% increase compared to the 197,833,176 passengers recorded during the same period in 2025. Over the past four years, commuter line usage for the January–July period has shown consistent growth. Passenger volume was recorded at 161,004,449 in 2023, rose to 186,056,667 in 2024, reached 197,833,176 in 2025, and climbed to 210,468,029 in 2026. Compared to January–July 2023, the volume of passengers this year increased by 49,463,580, or 30.72%. This development underscores the growing role of mass transportation in supporting economic and social activities in Indonesia’s largest metropolitan area.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the Commuter Line helps the public carry out daily activities more efficiently. Each journey connects residential areas with centres of employment, education, trade, healthcare, and public services. "The 210.47 million passengers who used the Jabodetabek Commuter Line in the first seven months of 2026 represent journeys to work, study, run businesses, meet family needs, and access public services. The reliability of mass transportation plays a direct role in maintaining the productivity of the Jabodetabek region," Anne said.

The high passenger volume also demonstrates the capacity benefits of rail-based transport in managing urban mobility. A single train set can serve many passengers in one journey, making the use of space, energy, and city infrastructure more efficient compared to individual travel by private vehicle. The Commuter Line provides travel certainty for workers and students, expands access to economic opportunities, and connects residents in buffer zones with activity centres in Jakarta and its surroundings. This connectivity helps maintain the smooth flow of public activities while reducing traffic congestion.

Anne added that reliable public transport provides greater access to employment, education, and business activities. Residents can live in buffer zones while remaining connected to various activity centres, allowing economic benefits to be more widely distributed across the Jabodetabek area. The environmental benefits of using the Commuter Line are also evident. According to an illustration in KAI’s 2025 Sustainability Report, a journey from Bekasi to Jakarta covering 30 kilometres by train produces approximately 2.4 kilograms of CO₂ per day. For the same distance, a journey by private car produces around 12 kilograms of CO₂ per day. The difference of 9.6 kilograms of CO₂ means that train use can reduce the daily carbon footprint by approximately 80%.

The same report notes that passenger trains produce around 41 grams of CO₂ per passenger per kilometre, while private vehicles produce around 192 grams of CO₂ per passenger per kilometre. This characteristic positions rail-based transport as an important instrument for reducing emissions in the transport sector and developing low-carbon urban areas. "The daily choice of travel mode shapes the long-term environmental impact. When millions of people use the Commuter Line, the benefits are felt through reduced travel emissions, energy savings, and less pressure from vehicles on the roads," Anne said.

KAI continues to strengthen capacity and service quality by improving the reliability of facilities, upgrading station amenities, scheduling journeys based on customer needs, reinforcing electrical and signalling systems, and integrating with other public transport modes. The Jabodetabek Commuter Line network in 2026 serves 85 stations, up from 71 stations in 2015. This network expansion strengthens public access from buffer zones to activity centres while supporting the development of new residential areas and economic hubs.

Mobility growth is also visible on the Cikarang Commuter Line, which serves the Bekasi area and the eastern corridor of Jabodetabek. Passenger volume on this line increased from 55.66 million journeys in 2022 to 84.53 million journeys in 2025. Over three years, the number of journeys increased by approximately 28.87 million, or 51.86%. In 2025, the Cikarang Commuter Line contributed 24.53% of the total Jabodetabek KRL passenger volume. This achievement makes it the second busiest line after the Bogor Commuter Line. Its growth demonstrates the high travel demand from residents of Bekasi, Cikarang, and the eastern areas to activity centres in Jakarta.

This increase reinforces the need for capacity development in the eastern corridor, including the reliability of rolling stock, electrical systems, signalling, station facilities, peak-hour scheduling, and the completion of infrastructure development that supports the separation of Commuter Line services from other train services. Anne Purba stated that the growth of the Cikarang Commuter Line shows that public transport has become a primary need for residents in the eastern part of Jabodetabek. Strengthening services on this line will help maintain productivity, expand economic access, reduce the burden on roads, and provide environmental benefits for the developing region. She added that the increase in passengers provides a basis for KAI to continue developing capacity gradually while prioritising safety, reliability, and punctuality.
