J.D. Vance Has Not Yet Departed for Switzerland for Iran Agreement Ceremony

Washington (ANTARA) - United States Vice President J.D. Vance has not yet departed for Switzerland for the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding with Iran because the technical plans related to the talks have not been finalised.

A White House spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday (18/6) that, as Vice President Vance conveyed in his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical discussions are not yet final and the U.S. delegation is ready to depart as soon as an opportunity arises.

“However, the logistical aspects of these negotiations have indeed never been simple or predictable. As of now, the Vice President will not be departing tonight (Thursday evening local time),” the statement read.

The U.S. government will provide specific information regarding the next steps.

Earlier, Vance said on Thursday that his travel plans to Switzerland for the signing of the memorandum of understanding with Iran were still on track and would likely take place this weekend. According to Vance, the visit schedule depends on when the Iranian representatives arrive in Switzerland.

Nevertheless, Iran has stressed that it will still participate in the talks with the United States.

On Sunday (14/6), Iran and the United States confirmed that the drafting of a memorandum of agreement between the two parties had been completed.

The memorandum provides a 60-day period for both countries to negotiate a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and U.S. sanctions.

Additionally, the document sets out a timetable for the United States to lift its maritime blockade and for Iran to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
