PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) together with PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) has begun the construction of the Lelilef Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to provide clean water access to the community in Lelilef Sawai Village and Lelilef Waibulan Village, Central Halmahera, North Maluku. The construction of this WTP is expected to meet the community’s basic needs for clean and proper water, support daily activities, and sustainably improve quality of life. This programme also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly goal 6 on clean water and sanitation and goal 3 on good health and well-being. The construction of the Lelilef Water Treatment Plant (WTP) facility was marked by the start of the installation of the distribution pipe network on Thursday, 23 April 2026. This WTP facility is equipped with two reservoirs with a total capacity of 5,200 cubic metres per day, as well as three WTP units in each reservoir with a capacity of 210 cubic metres per unit. General Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at IWIP, Iwan Kurniawan, stated that access to clean water is a fundamental need that impacts community life. “The start of the clean water pipe installation work marks the beginning of an improvement in quality of life. Access to clean water is often seen as simple, but it has a significant impact on community health, economy, and education,” said Iwan on Thursday, 23 April 2026. Iwan added that the success of this programme is not only determined by infrastructure development but also by the active role of the community in maintaining and managing the Lelilef WTP. “This programme is not only owned by IWIP, WBN, or the government, but by the community. Therefore, it is important for all of us to maintain the built network, use water wisely, and manage its use fairly at the village level,” he added. The Head of Weda Tengah Sub-District, Antonius, stated that the construction of this clean water network is a great hope for the community who have long faced limitations in accessing clean water. He called on all parties to support the smooth implementation of the project. “Clean water is a shared need and a broad community interest. Therefore, we urge the entire community to support the construction process, maintain conducive conditions, and ensure that this programme runs well until completion,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of Lelilef Waibulan Village, Faisal Djamil, emphasised the importance of maintaining the sustainability of the clean water programme as a shared community asset. “This clean water must be maintained as a long-term asset, not just for today, but also for future generations. Collective commitment is needed so that the Lelilef WTP that is built can continue to function and provide sustainable benefits,” he said. As part of the series of inaugurations for the construction of the Lelilef WTP, IWIP, Weda Bay Nickel (WBN), and representatives from the Sawai Village Government and Waibulan Village signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) as the basis for collaboration in the management and sustainability of the clean water installation, followed by the symbolisation of laying the first pipe as a sign of the start of clean water network work in the area, attended by IWIP Director Kevin He along with management, local government, and community representatives. Through the provision of clean water access, IWIP and WBN hope to provide benefits in various aspects of community life, from improving health, economic productivity, to environmental quality and education, and continue to deliver sustainable programmes that provide direct benefits to communities around the company’s operational areas.
