Iwan Koswara States Tatar Sunda Anniversary Parade Strengthens Youth Identity
West Java Regional Legislative Member, Iwan Koswara, believes that the Tatar Sunda Anniversary Cultural Parade holds significant meaning for the younger generation in maintaining cultural identity amidst the rapid waves of globalisation. According to him, strengthening local culture is an essential ongoing endeavour to ensure that society, particularly young people, does not lose their roots and identity as Sundanese people.
He noted that current technological advancements and global cultural shifts are bringing many changes to societal life. Therefore, cultural spaces such as the Tatar Sunda Anniversary must serve as both educational tools and reminders that West Java possesses a rich and highly valuable cultural heritage. “In this era of globalisation, the younger generation must maintain their local identity. While progress is unavoidable, Sundanese culture must not be abandoned. Activities such as cultural parades are vital for introducing and instilling a sense of pride in regional culture,” Iwan stated on 17 May 2026 at Gedung Sate, Bandung.
The series of cultural parades for the Tatar Sunda Anniversary began on 3 May 2026 in Sumedang Regency and concluded in Bandung. In addition to showcasing arts from 27 regencies and cities across West Java, the parade included representatives from regions outside West Java, including Aceh, DKI Jakarta, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Ponorogo, Tegal, and Brebes. The presence of these various regions is seen as a powerful symbol of the unity of Nusantara’s culture.
Iwan added that the inclusion of the Mahkota Binokasih Sanghyang Pake in the parade serves as a reminder that the Sundanese lands possess a long history and a great civilisation from the past. “Culture is not merely a spectacle, but also a guide. Young people must recognise that Sunda possesses noble history, values, and philosophy. This is what needs to be continuously passed down,” he remarked. He expressed hope that the Tatar Sunda Anniversary would not merely be a ceremonial agenda, but would foster a collective awareness within the community to preserve regional culture amidst the accelerating pace of change.
