Iwan Koswara Says Muharram Is a Momentum to Strengthen Solidarity in West Java

The Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1448 Hijriah is a momentum for the community to reflect while strengthening care for others. This was conveyed by West Java DPRD Commission V member from PSI, Iwan Koswara. According to Iwan, the spirit of hijrah contained in the Muharram commemoration is not only interpreted as a personal change for the better, but also as an impetus to strengthen social solidarity within society. Moreover, West Java, as the province with the largest population in Indonesia, faces various social challenges that require care and cooperation from all parties. “The most relevant meaning of hijrah today is how we move together to become better. Not only for ourselves, but also for the surrounding environment. Muharram teaches the importance of care, mutual cooperation, and social solidarity,” said Iwan on Tuesday (16/6/2026). He assessed that the people of West Java have long been known for having a friendly culture and applying the principles of silih asah, silih asih, and silih asuh, which form a strong foundation in community life. These values, according to him, need to be continuously nurtured amidst increasingly rapid and complex changes. As a people’s representative overseeing education, people’s welfare, youth, and culture, Iwan sees there is still much room to strengthen the spirit of togetherness in West Java. Starting from care for children who need better access to education, attention to vulnerable groups, to support for the younger generation so they can develop according to their potential. “West Java has extraordinary potential. But that potential will be stronger if accompanied by a sense of mutual care. When there are residents in difficulty, children threatened with dropping out of school, or communities needing assistance, that is where solidarity must be present,” he said. Iwan stated that PSI West Java views development not solely as a matter of infrastructure or economic growth. Development must also bring a sense of justice and ensure every citizen has the same opportunity to advance. Therefore, the value of solidarity is an important part of realising inclusive development. According to him, the month of Muharram can serve as a reminder that the progress of a region is not only determined by government policy, but also by the strength of social relations within the community. The spirit of sharing, helping others, and strengthening brotherhood is an important asset in facing various existing challenges. “Amidst the various dynamics we face today, I hope the people of West Java continue to maintain the spirit of togetherness. Let us make Muharram a starting point to strengthen solidarity, increase care, and bring benefits to others,” said Iwan. Because according to him, a strong region is born from a society that supports each other and does not leave one another behind. He also expressed hope that this year’s Islamic New Year commemoration would not only be an annual ceremony but also capable of fostering a new spirit to build a more advanced, harmonious, and socially caring West Java.
