ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi Aircraft Carrier to be Named KRI Sriwijaya

The arrival of the ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (C551) aircraft carrier in Indonesia is expected in a matter of days. Currently, the Garibaldi is docked at the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Indonesia’s first aircraft carrier is scheduled to arrive in Indonesian waters on 17 September 2026.

Interestingly, new rumours have emerged regarding the name of the Garibaldi. While it was previously suggested that the Fincantieri-produced Italian vessel would be named KRI Gajah Mada, recent reports indicate the name may instead be KRI Sriwijaya. “Yes, that is correct,” a Republika source in Jakarta stated on Friday (11/9/2026).

The source confirmed that the name KRI Sriwijaya will be officially announced when the Garibaldi arrives in Indonesia. If possible, the naming ceremony will be conducted by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
