ITPLN Develops AI-Based Rapid Charging Method for Electric Vehicles
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Lecturer at Institut Teknologi PLN (ITPLN) Samsurizal has developed an optimisation method for rapid charging of electric vehicles (EVs) based on artificial intelligence, which is claimed to be more efficient and safe for the electrical system.
“One of the biggest challenges in electric vehicle development is how to accelerate charging without damaging the battery and without disrupting the electricity grid,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.
Samsurizal highlighted the main dilemma of DC-based fast charging technology. On one hand, this technology can significantly reduce charging time. On the other hand, risks arise such as increased battery temperature, degradation of battery health (State of Health/SoH), and high load on the 20 kilovolt (kV) medium-voltage electricity grid.
“If not optimised, fast charging can impact battery lifespan and the overall stability of the electrical system,” he stated.
As a solution, Samsurizal proposes the use of the Thunderstorm Algorithm (TA), an artificial intelligence-based optimisation method inspired by the thunderstorm phenomenon.
This algorithm operates in three main phases: initial solution formation (cloud phase), optimal path search (streamer phase), and evaluation until convergence (avalanche phase).
“This method seeks the optimal point between charging performance and system safety,” explained Samsurizal.
He hopes this research can contribute to the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia, as well as open opportunities for integrating electric vehicles into smart energy systems or smart grids, which are an important part of the transition to clean energy.
“With the increasing use of electric vehicles, efficient and stable charging technology becomes key to the future of sustainable energy,” said Samsurizal.
It is known that this research was presented by him in a dissertation defence titled “Optimisation of Vehicle Fast Charging to 20 kV Grid Based on DC CHAdeMO Charging Using the Thunderstorm Algorithm Method”, held at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Malang at 1:00 PM WIB on Thursday (9/4).
