Itochu eyeing railway track project in Central Kalimantan

Jakarta (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - The government has received a letter from Japan's Itochu indicating interest in building a railway track in Central Kalimantan, Transport Minister Hatta Rajasa said.

Hatta told the newspaper Investor Daily, however, the government has to pass a law on railway before a decision can be made on the project.

Under the present law no private investor is allowed to handle railway projects without cooperating with state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia.

Earlier Hatta said the railway track project will help ease growing congestion in river transport especially in the the Barito river, a vital means of transport in the province.
