ITDP: Uneven Public Transport Coverage Hinders Emission Reduction in Greater Jakarta

Uneven public transport coverage remains one of the key challenges in increasing the use of public transport across Greater Jakarta. This situation risks entrenching public dependence on private vehicles.

ITDP Indonesia’s Southeast Asia Director, Gonggomtua E Sitanggang, said that efforts to raise the public transport mode share in Greater Jakarta continue to face obstacles because service coverage is not yet evenly distributed.

“Increasing the public transport mode share in Greater Jakarta still faces challenges because service coverage is not yet evenly distributed,” Gonggomtua said in South Jakarta on Thursday (20/8).

According to him, this issue is critical because reducing transport emissions requires a shift from private vehicles to public transport.

Jakarta itself is targeting a public transport mode share of 55% by 2045. The target is set out in DKI Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 8 of 2024 concerning the DKI Jakarta Provincial Long-Term Development Plan 2025–2045.

However, Jakarta’s target cannot stand alone. The Bodetabek areas must also increase public transport use because people’s journeys take place across regional boundaries.

The disparity in service coverage means that some residents living in the buffer zones do not yet have adequate public transport options.

As a result, private vehicles remain an important mode of transport for mobility into Jakarta.

“ITDP believes that the expansion of public transport services across Greater Jakarta must proceed in tandem with improvements in intercity and intermodal connectivity,” he said.

ITDP Indonesia stressed the importance of integrating Greater Jakarta’s transport system for its 42 million residents in order to reduce air pollution and improve mobility.
