ITB Manages Electronic Waste, Users Can Earn Free Internet Data
The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) has become the first campus in Bandung to provide electronic waste management facilities using an automated machine. Through ByeByeBox, users can deposit small electronic devices that are no longer in use and receive bonus internet data based on the weight of the waste collected.
Users can bring their unused small electronic devices and follow the instructions on the ByeByeBox screen. The devices are scanned and validated using cameras and AI technology, then automatically weighed and recorded in the Remind system.
The collected electronic waste is subsequently processed through a material recovery approach and more responsible management. Materials that still hold value are returned to the utilisation cycle in line with circular economy principles.
Muhammad Dzikri Ahira Soefihara, Founder and CEO of Remind, an electronic waste management platform, said his side developed the ByeByeBox application to make e-waste processing more accessible and measurable. The facility also supports the collection, recording and material recovery process.
“Electronic devices that are no longer used can still hold value in the next utilisation cycle,” he said on Monday (14/9/2026).
Meanwhile, Director and Chief Regulatory Officer of XL SMART, Merza Fachys, said the growth of connectivity and digital technology must go hand in hand with responsibility for managing environmental impacts. The company wants to make e-waste management easier, closer and more relevant for the younger generation.
He said the programme forms part of efforts to build an increasingly responsible and sustainable digital ecosystem, as well as to strengthen the implementation of ESG and Sustainability.
Merza said the e-waste management programme at ITB is independently assessed by CDP and Fitch Ratings ESG. The programme runs from 14 to 28 September 2026 and targets the collection of 600 kilogrammes of electronic waste.
Users of XL, AXIS and Smartfren can receive bonus main data based on the weight of the electronic waste collected. The bonus offered is 500 MB for waste under 1 kilogramme, 1 GB for 1–2 kilogrammes, and 1.5 GB for more than 2 kilogrammes, valid for one day.
The programme involves cross-sector collaboration between XL SMART, Remind, the ITB Metallurgy Students Association, the Bandung Institute of Technology, GSMA and Bappenas.
