ITB and Shanghai Microport MedBot to Develop Medical Robotics Technology
The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Chinese medical technology manufacturer, Shanghai Microport MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd., have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for research and development (R&D) cooperation in the field of medical robotics. The signing ceremony took place at the ITB campus in Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday (29/7).
ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Lavi Rizki Zuhal, stated that the scope of this cooperation includes the development of joint research programmes, including the initiation of a research centre to support the advancement of health science and technology at ITB. “This collaboration aligns with ITB’s plan to strengthen the development of health science and technology, including medical robotics. ITB is ready to support the research and innovation required by Indonesia in the field of medical technology,” Zuhal said in an official statement.
The partnership is also seen as aligned with the Indonesian government’s commitment to accelerating the development of national health technology, specifically in the area of robotic surgery. This partnership is expected to strengthen the health research ecosystem while driving innovation and the transformation of healthcare services in Indonesia.
MedBot operates a business network across dozens of countries and is actively developing various innovations in surgical robotics. Alongside various international partners, the company is also developing artificial intelligence (AI), telesurgery, and the use of satellite communication technology to support healthcare services.
Director of Shanghai Microport MedBot, Chao He, noted that Indonesia holds great potential as a location for the future development of research and the implementation of telesurgery technology. “With the research and engineering capabilities possessed by ITB, we are optimistic that this collaboration will produce various innovations in the field of medical robotics,” he said.
