Italy ready to join mine-clearing operation in Strait of Hormuz
Rome (ANTARA) - The Italian Navy has signalled its readiness to participate in a mine-clearing operation in the Strait of Hormuz after the current conflict subsides, as reported by ANSA news agency on Wednesday (22/4) citing navy sources. ANSA’s report states that officials emphasise that such efforts would not be undertaken unilaterally, but rather within a coordinated multilateral framework. Italy’s Foreign Ministry has also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, as well as supporting maritime security through collective and multilateral cooperation. Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz carry major implications for Europe’s energy security. The Italian government and security officials have highlighted these risks, indicating that the issue is under close review and opening prospects for expanding maritime security operations within a broader European framework.
