Italy provides $15m for hospital

MANADO, North Sulawesi: Italy has provided US$15 million in medical equipment for the Malalayang Hospital, which was dedicated by President Soeharto yesterday.

The modern equipment was supplied by Cofegar Impresit of the FIAT group. It includes a CT scanner, cobalt therapy equipment, a hyperbaric chamber, a radiological simulator, haemodyalisis equipment and 18 operating theaters.

Italian officials said the equipment was "the most advanced" Italy had ever provided to Indonesian hospitals.

Italian ambassador Mario Brando Pensa was among dignitaries present at the inauguration ceremony.

The ambassador and North Sulawesi governor C.J. Rantung discussed possible economic cooperation, notably in the tourism industry. According to Pensa, 50,000 Italian tourists visit Indonesia every year. (pan)
