Rome (ANTARA) - Italy has once again extended checks at air and sea border posts with Spain for 15 days due to the ongoing situation in Ceuta, local media reported on Wednesday (30/9).

According to the daily Corriere della Sera, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi decided to extend the checks following a meeting with the Committee for Immigration Analysis and Border Security.

The decision was triggered by the current situation in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the North African coast, and the continuation of previously identified security and migration concerns, according to the report.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior has notified the European Commission and the interior ministers of other European Union (EU) member states of this measure, the report stated.

This marks the third extension imposed by the Italian Ministry of the Interior since the migrant emergency emerged in Ceuta, reported the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

The temporary suspension of the Schengen rules means that checks will remain in place at Italy’s air and sea border crossings with Spain.
