Italian Citizens Uncertain of Return Due to Anak Krakatau Eruption
Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport remains crowded with passengers whose flights failed to depart due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on Sunday (6/9/2026). Passengers are currently waiting for flight rescheduling or refunds.
Nicola Paggi, an Italian traveller, is among those affected by the flight disruptions caused by the eruption. Nicola explained that his flight to Rome was originally scheduled to depart at 18:00 WIB. However, due to the eruption, he was initially informed that his flight would be delayed until 21:00 WIB. Later, Nicola received news that his flight would not depart today or tomorrow.
“I do not yet know when I can return; I have not received a new schedule. I hope the situation changes,” said Nicola on Sunday (6/9/2026).
As a result of this incident, Nicola simply hopes to return to Italy as soon as possible. Nicola and his wife are now brainstorming alternative routes to ensure they can arrive in Italy at the earliest opportunity. “I hope to return (to Rome) as soon as possible; I am trying to find other possible routes,” Nicola added.
According to observations at the scene, many passengers have not yet left Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport. They are queuing to await certainty regarding flight rescheduling or refunds. A number of police officers were seen on standby around the counters where long queues of passengers have formed.
“Yes, they are waiting to see what happens, whether it is a reschedule or a refund,” said one security officer.
It is reported that 22,798 passengers have been affected by the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport due to the dispersal of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has ensured that airport staff and airlines continue to provide assistance to passengers while airport operations remain suspended.
