It Turns Out GAC Is Also Developing Hydrogen Technology

GUANGZHOU, KOMPAS.com – The global development of eco-friendly vehicles is not solely focused on battery electric vehicles (BEVs). GAC Group, a Chinese automotive giant, is also developing a hydrogen fuel-powered drivetrain. One example is the GAC ERA Concept car, which was first introduced at the Shanghai Auto Show 2023. “GAC has indeed been developing it (hydrogen); if I’m not mistaken, it started several years ago and is still being developed today,” said Iqbal when met in Guangzhou on Wednesday (22/4/2026). This serious step aligns with the major target for hydrogen vehicle usage in the Land of the Bamboo Curtain, set to increase sharply this year. “In China itself, the news is that by 2026, the target is 100,000 hydrogen vehicles, so at GAC, we’re also focusing on that; not just on EVs or hybrids, but on hydrogen as well,” he continued. Iqbal explained that although the term hydrogen car may sound similar, hydrogen vehicles have two different methods. “Hydrogen falls under NEV (new energy vehicle), which includes all hybrid drivetrains, then BEVs and hydrogen,” he said.
