Istiqlal Mosque Drops Coupon System for Sacrificial Meat Distribution as Recipients Pre-Registered
JAKARTA — Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar said that the distribution of sacrificial meat at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta does not use a coupon system. Sacrificial meat will be distributed through representatives from foundations, institutions, mosques, and musallas in Jabodetabek. All representatives had previously submitted proposals and were verified by the Istiqlal Mosque Eid al-Adha committee. ‘Islamic universities that have long collaborated with Istiqlal will continue to receive allocations, as will orphanages under the mosque’s supervision,’ he added. According to Nasaruddin, the mosque’s distribution method is an update from the previous coupon-based system. A pre-registration system has replaced coupons to streamline the process. The coupon system had caused long queues, pushing, and even fighting among the public. ‘This led to people fainting and other incidents. We have chosen the safest method,’ he said. In addition to mosques, musallas, and foundations, the mosque’s staff will also receive a portion of the sacrificial meat. ‘Cleaning staff and security personnel alone number over 200, around 260, plus other employees, so some meat is distributed on-site,’ he added. Nasaruddin said the Eid al-Adha committee receives sacrificial animals directly and carries out slaughter at the Istiqlal animal slaughterhouse. Slaughter will commence on Thursday, 28 May 2026, at 7:00 AM WIB. Sacrificial slaughter at Istiqlal is monitored by religious officials from start to finish to ensure compliance with Islamic law.
