Istiqlal Distributes 10,728 Packages of Sacrificial Meat
Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque has been entrusted with the slaughter of 65 cattle and 13 goats for Eid al-Adha 1447 H. Among the animals were a 1.3-ton ox named ‘Si Loreng’ donated by President Prabowo Subianto and a 1.2-ton ox named ‘Wirabumi’ from the Vice President.
The sacrificial slaughter took place on Thursday, 28 May 2026. The meat was packaged into 10,728 one-kilogram portions.
Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar stated that the slaughter adhered to Islamic guidelines and animal welfare standards. The process at Istiqlal serves as a model for other mosques across Indonesia, with approximately 50 personnel from the Halal Slaughter Supervision Team overseeing the operation.
‘Everything here follows standard procedures. First, we ensure the sunnah practices are observed, with the head facing the qibla. The body is cleaned beforehand to prevent any impurities from adhering to the meat distributed to worshippers,’ Umar said.
He also prohibited actions that could cause animal suffering, including skinning animals before confirming death.
The sacrificial slaughter at Istiqlal has also been confirmed to be environmentally friendly. The minister urged organisers to maintain cleanliness and ensure zero accidents during the process.
‘We have consistently campaigned on the importance of maintaining environmental ecot theology. Not a single drop of sacrificial blood must flow into rivers. After the slaughter, the surrounding gardens must be restored to their original cleanliness,’ he stressed.
Iduladha 1447 H Committee Chairman Mas’ud Halimin affirmed the committee and field teams’ strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Waste from the slaughter is managed centrally and carefully to prevent environmental contamination, particularly river pollution around the mosque, ensuring maximum preservation of natural ecology and cleanliness.
Mas’ud added that the 10,728 meat packages would be distributed systematically to avoid crowds. The meat is allocated to 52 foundations, 87 mosques/DKM/Majelis Taklim, 41 institutions, 104 neighbourhood representative units (RT/RW), and Istiqlal Mosque’s community partners across Greater Jakarta and parts of West Java.
