Israeli Soldiers Shoot Dead Man in West Bank Refugee Camp
According to AFP, Saturday (16/5/2026), the victim has been identified as Nour al-Din Kamal Hassan Fayyad (34). The victim was killed by Israeli forces’ gunfire in the Jenin camp.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said its team in Jenin received a man with no signs of breathing or pulse from inside the Jenin camp after he suffered gunshot wounds to the thigh.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military said its troops shot the victim as he tried to enter the Jenin Camp.
“IDF soldiers identified a suspect attempting to infiltrate the area of the Jenin Camp, where soldiers were operating, and entry was prohibited,” the military said in a statement.
The Israeli forces initially fired warning shots, but the man continued to approach the camp.
“After the suspect refused to comply with orders and continued to try to approach the area, the soldiers shot at him, resulting in his injury,” the Israeli military statement said.
The Israeli forces added that its soldiers provided initial medical treatment to the victim before handing him over to the Red Crescent.
Israel launched a large-scale military operation last January in several Palestinian refugee camps in the north, where troops said they were trying to eradicate armed groups.
The operation targeted the Jenin and Tulkarem camps and has caused nearly 40,000 Palestinians to be displaced, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
The Israeli military has closed off the Jenin camp, only allowing refugee residents to access their homes and belongings in limited numbers.
Since the war in Gaza broke out in October 2023, near-daily violence has also rocked the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 1,073 Palestinians since then, including many militants, according to an AFP count based on data from the Palestinian health ministry.
Official Israeli figures show that at least 46 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the same period.
