Israeli Media Says Turkey Now a Greater Strategic Challenge Than Iran

An analysis published by Israeli newspaper Maariv has described Turkey as a strategic challenge that is considered greater for Israel than Iran in the long term. In the analytical article published on Tuesday (23/6), Maariv discussed various geopolitical and military developments in the region and highlighted shifts in the balance of power that could affect Israel’s future security interests. The analysis concluded that Turkey currently presents a more serious challenge for Israel than Iran. One factor under scrutiny is the rapid development of Turkey’s military capabilities and the progress of its defence industry in recent years. Ankara is said to have successfully strengthened the independence of its national defence sector, meeting approximately 80 percent of its military needs. However, Maariv assessed that the greatest potential threat to Israel in a confrontation scenario with Turkey would likely come from Ankara’s naval power. Turkey currently possesses a naval fleet consisting of 16 submarines, various modern frigates, and the TCG Anadolu amphibious assault ship, which is one of the most important strategic assets in the country’s maritime strength. According to the analysis, Turkey’s rapid progress in military technology development and weapons production has significantly enhanced Ankara’s strategic position in the regional security landscape. These developments are said to be of particular concern to policymakers in Israel, who continue to monitor changes in the balance of power in the Middle East and its surroundings.
