The Israeli military has launched fresh strikes on Gaza, attacking a police vehicle and killing eight people.

“Eight martyrs arrived as a result of targeting a police vehicle in the city of Zawaida in central Gaza Strip,” the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, said in a statement, according to AFP, on Sunday (15 March 2026).

The attack occurred as a Hamas delegation was scheduled to meet with Egyptian officials in Cairo, whilst Gaza’s civil defence authority reported four additional deaths from an earlier Israeli strike.

When questioned about both incidents, the Israeli military said it was investigating the reports.

Hamas-controlled Gaza’s Interior Ministry confirmed the casualty toll, stating that all those killed were police officers, including the central Gaza police chief, Colonel Iyad Abu Yousef.

Violence continues in the devastated Palestinian territories despite a ceasefire that has been in effect since 10 October, with Israel and Hamas regularly accusing each other of violations.

Earlier, Gaza’s civil defence authority—operating as a rescue force under Hamas authority—said an Israeli strike killed four people in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central region.

In a statement, Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned the bombing as a “blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement”.

The latest deaths occurred as a Hamas source stated that a delegation in Cairo had met with Bulgarian politician Nickolay Mladenov, appointed as high representative for Gaza under the Peace Council of US President Donald Trump.

The Peace Council was established after the Trump administration, with longtime mediators Qatar and Egypt, negotiated a ceasefire to end the war devastating Gaza for two years.
