'Israel Treats GSF Activists Worse Than Animals'
The abduction of participants from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)—who were on a humanitarian mission to breach the Gaza blockade in international waters—has left behind a trail of tragic accounts. According to testimonies from recently released participants, many had anticipated interception, arrest, or detention. However, few imagined they would endure what they described as days filled with violence, humiliation, and torture after Israeli forces seized the vessels in international waters.
As hundreds of activists arrived in Istanbul following their release and deportation, testimonies from doctors, activists, and GSF participants provided a grim picture of the treatment inflicted upon more than 400 activists from 40 different countries. Various accounts describe beatings, electric shocks, severe physical assaults, alleged sexual abuse, the use of attack dogs, prolonged confinement, and detention in extremely poor conditions. Despite sharing their own bitter experiences, many activists repeatedly stated that such treatment is incomparable to the suffering endured by the residents of Gaza.
According to the Palestine Chronicle, several activists emphasised that what they experienced is merely a small fraction of the dark reality faced by Palestinians every day. The Global Sumud Flotilla departed from Türkiye as part of an international campaign aimed at challenging the blockade imposed on Gaza, seeking to draw global attention to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian enclave.
The Israeli Navy intercepted the flotilla in international waters west of Cyprus before transferring the activists to Ashdod and various detention facilities. More than 420 activists subsequently arrived in Istanbul via Turkish airlines after being deported by Israeli authorities. Participants described the chaotic situation immediately after Israeli forces boarded their ships. Dr Bianca Webb-Pullman, an Australian doctor, noted that several projectiles were fired during the interception process, stating, ‘It was likely not live ammunition, but they were firing projectiles towards our ship.’
