Israel Targets Weakening of Iranian Regime as Trump Claims 48 Leaders Killed
A brutal and deadly assault from Israel and the United States on Iran last Saturday (28 February) has shocked the world.
An unnamed Israeli official stated that the military operation against Iran aims to weaken the Tehran regime to the point of overthrow, whilst US President Donald Trump claimed 48 Iranian leaders were killed in the combined strike, which he described as highly successful.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israel is acting in its own way to encourage Iranian citizens to take to the streets and protest their government. However, he did not provide details on the methods or tactics being deployed for this purpose.
Meanwhile, President Trump conveyed claims regarding the impact of the joint US-Israeli operation. In an interview cited by Fox News, Trump stated that 48 Iranian leaders died in the bombing and described the results as a major achievement.
“Nobody believes the success we’ve achieved, 48 leaders have died in one strike. And this is moving very quickly,” Trump said.
The military operation reportedly targeted the capital Tehran and several other cities across Iran on Saturday. According to ABC News reports, the United States named the operation Operation Epic Fury, whilst Israel called it Operation Roaring Lion.
Trump asserted that the operation aims to remove Iran’s leadership and cripple its military capabilities. The Iranian government has confirmed the death of its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
In a separate interview with CNBC, Trump reiterated his optimism about the military operation’s progress.
“We are doing our work not just for ourselves but for the world. And everything is moving faster than schedule,” he said.
“Right now everything is developing very positively, very positively,” he concluded.
President Prabowo Subianto expressed his readiness to travel to Tehran to mediate the conflict between Iran and the United States.
