Israel Shows No End to Spreading Chaos, Lebanon Its Latest Victim
A new wave of Israeli strikes on Saturday (23 May) in the early hours local time damaged a hospital in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, according to state news agency NNA. The attack caused extensive damage to Hiram Hospital, including the operating theatre, nurses’ quarters, patient wards, clinics, power supply, and windows. Other buildings in the city were reported to have been reduced to rubble. Israeli fighter jets also damaged a large number of nearby homes and infrastructure, including water networks, electricity, and internal roads in the residential area. Ambulances and a civil defence rescue team were deployed to the scene to assess the extent of the damage. Israeli forces also carried out air strikes on Yohmor al-Shaqif.
Lebanese officials said more than 3,000 people have been killed and 1.6 million displaced since the latest Israeli attacks in Lebanon began on 2 March, shortly after Hizbullah carried out retaliatory actions linked to the Iran conflict.
Israeli air strikes continued despite the US-brokered ceasefire that remains in effect until early July.
