Israel Kills Two Senior Hamas Figures in Gaza Again – Impact on Resistance?
Tel Aviv — The Israeli military announced on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, that it had targeted two key Hamas figures in Gaza City. The strike occurred a day after the death of Al-Qassam Brigades figure Mohammed Awda.
Channel 14 Israel reported, citing security sources, that the targets included the Northern Gaza Brigade commander, Deputy Gaza Brigade commander, and Zaitoun Battalion commander from Hamas.
Meanwhile, Channel 12 Israel stated that the Israeli military targeted the Northern Gaza Brigade commander and his deputy.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said at least seven Palestinians were killed, including two girls, and over 20 others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a house in central Gaza City.
Hospital sources in the area reported the death toll in Gaza since Wednesday morning had risen to 18.
Al Jazeera correspondent Ghazi Al-Aloul reported that Israeli fighter jets bombed an apartment in a densely populated residential building surrounded by refugee tents. He added that the targeted apartment was hit by three missiles, describing the scene as “horrific” and a “massacre” due to the severe injuries of most victims taken to Gaza City hospitals.
Al Jazeera correspondent Ilyas Karam in Palestine said initial Israeli media reports indicated the Northern Gaza Brigade commander and Gaza City Brigade commander were attending a meeting when the attack occurred. The meeting reportedly discussed appointing a successor to Al-Qassam Brigades chief of staff Mohammed Awda, who was killed on Tuesday night in an Israeli strike in the Rimal district of Gaza City.
Karam explained the latest operation is part of Israel’s ongoing campaign following the killings of Al-Qassam commander Izzuddin Al-Haddad and his successor, Mohammed Awda.
Hours before the latest attack, the Al-Qassam Brigades issued a statement mourning Awda, referring to him as their chief of staff. The group stated that the killing of senior leaders would not weaken their struggle but would strengthen their resolve to continue resistance.
Thousands of Palestinians attended Awda’s funeral, where he was killed alongside his wife and two children in the Rimal district strike.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz have repeatedly vowed to hunt down and kill those involved in the 7 October 2023 attacks.
