The Israeli military says it has destroyed an underground bunker in Tehran, Iran. The bunker was reportedly prepared by Iran for their Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, to command against Israeli and United States forces.

‘The underground military bunker, located beneath the leadership complex in central Tehran, was intended to be used by the Supreme Leader of the Iranian regime as a secure emergency command centre,’ the Israeli military said, as reported by AFP on Friday (6 March 2026).

Israel says the bunker had been used by Khamenei during the 12-day Israel–Iran conflict in mid-2025. After Khamenei’s death, Israel said the bunker was used by a number of Iranian officials.

‘Khamenei died before he could use the bunker during Operation Roaring Lion, but the complex continued to be used by senior regime officials,’ the Israeli military said.

The Israeli military says around 50 fighter jets were involved in the strike on the underground network spanning several streets in the heart of Tehran.

Ali Khamenei is understood to have died at the leadership complex on Saturday, 28 February, on the first day of a joint US–Israel strike that triggered the Middle East war.

The Pentagon later stated that the Israeli attack killed him, while Trump said it was partly thanks to US intelligence.

Khamenei’s body has not yet been buried. The funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader is scheduled to be held in the holy city of Mashhad.
