Jakarta – A member of Commission I of the Indonesian Parliament, Sukamta, has called for caution regarding Israel’s attack on Iran, warning that the assault could potentially develop into a regional war.

“What needs to be monitored is the possibility of wider escalation. This conflict could develop into a regional war if other nations—whether allies of Iran or Israel—become directly involved, and this will certainly impact the global economy because any tension in the Middle East can affect world energy markets, global investors, and trade routes,” Sukamta told reporters on Saturday (28 February 2026).

Sukamta predicted several possible developments, including retaliation from Iran. The PKS politician assessed that the attack is also serious and could potentially disrupt ongoing diplomacy. Consequently, Indonesia, together with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OKI), needs to prevent escalation to avoid a wider conflict.

“The Republic of Indonesia, together with OKI, must prevent escalation so this does not become a wider conflict. All parties should exercise restraint; Israel needs to stop its aggression,” he said.

Israel attacked Tehran, Iran, on Saturday (28 February 2026) morning and subsequently closed airspace, declaring a state of emergency. An Israeli military spokesperson stated that the bombardment was a preventive strike to eliminate threats to the country.

The Islamic Republic of Iran declared itself ready to retaliate against Israel. In a statement from the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Jakarta, this counterattack is a legitimate right under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will fully exercise this right in order to defend the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran by providing a firm and strong response to the aggression of the Zionist Israeli regime and the United States,” stated the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta in its release on Saturday.

Iran also stated that the Israeli attack, directed by the United States, targeted civilian locations and vital infrastructure in Tehran. On this basis, Iran called on the UN Security Council to take decisive action against violations committed by the United States and Israel.

Iran also requested Indonesia’s support in condemning the actions of Israel and the United States.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran asks the President and Members of the Security Council to immediately take steps in this regard,” the Iranian Embassy stated.
