Island Compost Centre Established in Kura Kura Bali SEZ, 9.8 Tonnes of Organic Waste Processed
The Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is advancing its waste management capabilities through the development of the Island Compost Centre (ICC). This facility is specifically designed to process organic waste into compost.
Zefri Alfaruqy, Head of the Communications Department at Kura Kura Bali SEZ, stated that the ICC officially commenced operations in June 2026, following a trial phase that began in September 2025. As of August 2026, the ICC has successfully processed 9.8 tonnes of organic waste from the Kura Kura Bali SEZ.
“We did not wait for a perfect system to begin. The most important thing is to build habits, infrastructure, and a waste management system that can have a positive impact on the environment,” Zefri said in a written statement on Tuesday (1/9/2026).
The ICC composting process takes three months to produce mature compost, which will subsequently be used to fertilise green areas throughout the zone. The facility utilises two methods: the open windrow method and ring composting.
“Waste management in Kura Kura Bali is not merely an operational responsibility, but part of our long-term commitment to building a zone that does not burden the surrounding environment,” he explained.
The development of this facility also involves the community of Serangan Island from both social and economic perspectives, as all facility managers are residents of Serangan Village.
“Actually, this task is quite new to me. The programme truly supports the current government’s initiatives, as we are currently grappling with waste issues that burden the environment,” said Wayan Sudibya, a resident of Serangan Village who works at the facility.
Moving forward, Kura Kura Bali SEZ plans to target the construction of two additional environmental facilities: a Recycle Material Warehouse and an Eco Edu Centre.
