Islamic Youth Movement Urges Public Not to Be Provoked by Demonstration
A youth group operating under the name of the Islamic Youth Movement (GPI) has declared its position ahead of a planned demonstration by the Pati United Community Alliance (AMPB) in front of the MPR/DPR/DPD building in Jakarta on 27 August 2026. The group called on all citizens not to be provoked.
The declaration was held at the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) in Velodrome, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (26/8/2026). Khoirul Amin, Chairman of the GPI Central Board, stressed that democracy is an important part of national and state life.
"We reject all forms of provocation that have the potential to divide national unity and integrity. We also reject any attempt to use people’s issues to build hostility, worsen the atmosphere, or pit elements of society against one another," Khoirul told reporters.
According to GPI, people’s aspirations must be conveyed in a dignified, constitutional, and peaceful manner, without sacrificing the greater interests of the nation. The group also asserted that AMPB has no legitimacy to claim to represent the entire Indonesian people.
"We respect the people of Pati and any group that conveys its aspirations. However, no single community group can automatically claim and legitimise itself as the representative of the entire Indonesian people," he explained.
"Therefore, we ask that the use of narratives in the name of the Indonesian people be carried out responsibly and not be used to build unilateral legitimacy for the interests of a particular group," he added.
GPI rejected all forms of action that could potentially lead to anarchic acts and disrupt public order. The group called on all demonstration participants to maintain order, refrain from violence, avoid damaging public facilities, not threaten the safety of others, and respect security forces and all state institutions.
"Expressing opinions is a constitutional right, but anarchic actions are not part of a healthy democracy. We invite all Indonesian youth to become pioneers of unity and peace. We call on all Indonesian youth not to become part of provocation," he said.
GPI explained that the spread of unverified information and hate speech can weaken national unity and integrity. The group believes that youth must be present as a moral force that keeps Indonesia peaceful, democratic, sovereign, and dignified.
"We believe that differences of opinion are a blessing and an inevitability in a democracy. However, differences must not turn into hostility and conflict that threaten national unity," he said.
GPI considers Indonesia too large to be put at risk by the interests of any particular group. National unity, the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, and state sovereignty, according to GPI, must be a shared interest above political or group interests.
"Amid the various problems facing the nation, we invite all elements of society to prioritise the interests of the nation, unity, peace, and the safety of the people as a whole," he concluded.
