Islamic New Year Holiday: KAI North Sumatra Serves 14,967 Passengers

PT Kereta Api Indonesia Regional Division I North Sumatra recorded high public mobility during the national holiday for the Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1448 Hijriah, which fell on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. Although this national holiday was not accompanied by a collective leave period, public interest in using train transportation continued to show a positive trend.

As of 11:00 WIB on Tuesday, the number of passengers had reached 7,414 people. KAI Divre I North Sumatra projects that this number will continue to increase, given that several train departures are still scheduled for the afternoon and evening.

Accumulatively over the last two days—the period leading up to the holiday on Monday (15/6) and the Islamic New Year itself on Tuesday (16/6)—KAI Divre I North Sumatra has served a total of 14,967 passengers. This figure consists of 7,553 passengers on 15 June 2026 and 7,414 passengers recorded until 11:00 WIB on 16 June 2026.

Anwar Yuli Prastyo, Manager of Public Relations for KAI Divre I North Sumatra, stated that trains remain a preferred choice for the public because they offer safe, comfortable, and punctual travel, free from road traffic congestion.

“Even though it did not form a long holiday due to the lack of collective leave, public enthusiasm for using trains during this Islamic New Year holiday remains high. This shows that the railway remains a reliable transportation solution to support intercity mobility in North Sumatra,” said Anwar.

Anwar added that the KA Sribilah Fakultatif service for the Medan–Rantauprapat (round trip) route has also resumed operations to accommodate passenger needs and provide alternative travel schedules for the public.

“KAI Divre I North Sumatra invites all passengers to help maintain order and comply with regulations while at the station and during the train journey. In doing so, mutual comfort, security, and safety can be maintained,” Anwar added.

Based on preliminary data as of 16 June 2026 at 08:00 WIB, the number of passengers arriving at and departing from Tegal Station reached 24,543.

Between January and May 2026, Dolok Merangir Station served 5,300 passengers, representing a 20 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2025. Deli Serdang also remains one of the regions with high railway passenger mobility in North Sumatra.
