Islamic Higher Education Institutions Forge Blueprint for Gender-Equitable and Inclusive Ecosystem

Amidst growing public demand for the urgency of safe spaces within educational institutions, Islamic Higher Education (PTKI) is taking strategic steps. Through the National Consolidation of the Centre for Gender and Child Studies (PSGA), held at UIN Siber Syekh Nurjati Cirebon from 30 June to 3 July 2026, a blueprint will be formulated to strengthen an academic ecosystem that is gender-fair, inclusive, and free from all forms of violence.

This major agenda, which brings together hundreds of academics, researchers, kiai, and nyai from across Indonesia, serves not only as a platform for academic exchange via an International Conference but also as a turning point for strengthening macro-religious policies in response to national social dynamics.

Constructing gender justice based on tradition

Discourse regarding gender justice in Islam is often faced with the clash of cultural biases. To address this challenge, the forum presents a comprehensive perspective rooted in the authority of classical texts as well as modern relevance.

German academic Katrin Bandel, PhD, opened the session by analysing the cultural factors and institutional power that have historically served as the structural roots of the persistence of sexual violence within formal institutions.
