Islamic Business Ethics in the Digital Era: Upholding Trust and Building Confidence
The development of the digital economy has brought major changes to various aspects of life, particularly in how society conducts transactions and runs businesses. The presence of marketplaces, social media, digital wallets, and artificial intelligence (AI) technology provides convenience for business actors to expand market reach, increase operational efficiency, and accelerate services to consumers. This transformation creates enormous economic opportunities, especially for MSMEs, which can now compete in a wider market without needing a physical shop.
However, behind these various conveniences, the development of the digital economy also presents significant challenges. Cases of fraud in online transactions, manipulation of product reviews, the spread of misleading information, and unfair business competition are increasingly common. This situation indicates that technological progress is not always accompanied by an improvement in the quality of business ethics. Therefore, a moral guideline is needed to direct business actors to conduct economic activities honestly, fairly, and responsibly.
From an Islamic perspective, business is not merely an economic activity to gain profit but is also part of worship to Allah SWT. All forms of muamalah must be based on the values of monotheism, honesty (shiddiq), trustworthiness (amanah), justice, and social responsibility. These principles serve as an important foundation for building trust between sellers and buyers while creating blessings in every transaction. Thus, the application of Islamic business ethics remains relevant and is even increasingly needed amidst the rapid development of digital technology.
This article discusses the importance of applying Islamic business ethics in facing the challenges of the digital economy, while explaining how Islamic values can serve as a guide for business actors to build businesses that are not only economically profitable but also beneficial to society and in accordance with Sharia principles.
Qur’anic Foundation on Trustworthiness in Business
QS. An-Nisa’ verse 29 states: ‘O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent.’ This verse serves as the basis that transactions must be transparent, honest, and free from fraud. QS. Al-Muthaffifin verses 1-3 also condemn those who cheat in weights and measures, serving as a warning for modern business actors.
Principles of Islamic Business Ethics in the Digital Era
Islamic business ethics are moral guidelines that govern how a business actor conducts business in accordance with Sharia. In the digital era, these principles remain relevant and are even more important for building consumer trust amidst rapid technological development.
Several main principles of Islamic business ethics include:
- Honesty (Shiddiq)
Honesty is the main foundation in business. Business actors must convey product or service information truthfully without exaggerating quality or hiding defects. In digital business, honesty can be applied through accurate product descriptions, non-misleading product photos, and avoiding fake reviews.
- Trustworthiness (Amanah)
Trustworthiness means maintaining the trust given by consumers. Its application includes sending products according to orders, maintaining the quality of goods or services, and protecting customer personal data.
- Justice
Islam teaches that every transaction must be conducted fairly without harming any party. In digital business practices, justice can be realised by setting reasonable prices, not manipulating discounts, and not engaging in unfair business competition.
- Responsibility and Ihsan
Business actors should not only pursue profit but also be responsible for customer satisfaction. The attitude of ihsan encourages business actors to provide the best service, accept criticism gracefully, and resolve consumer complaints professionally.
By applying honesty, trustworthiness, justice, and responsibility, business actors can build trust, increase customer loyalty, and create a business that is not only economically profitable but also brings blessings. As the Prophet Muhammad SAW said: ‘The honest and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs.’ (HR. At-Tirmidhi). This hadith shows that honesty and trustworthiness are not merely business ethics but also a path to obtaining honour in the sight of Allah SWT.
The development of the digital economy provides great opportunities for business actors to grow, but also presents various ethical challenges. Therefore, the application of Islamic business ethics principles, such as honesty (shiddiq), trustworthiness (amanah), justice, and responsibility, becomes an important foundation in creating healthy and fair transactions. By making Islamic values a guide, business actors can not only build customer trust and loyalty but also obtain blessings in all their business activities. Ultimately, technological progress should be a means to bring benefit to society, not to ignore moral and Sharia values.
