Islamic Business Ethics as a Marketing Strategy for Halal MSMEs
The development of social media has transformed the marketing strategies used by halal Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia. Various digital platforms provide opportunities for business actors to expand market reach, build interactions with consumers, and increase competitiveness. However, increasingly fierce competition has also given rise to various marketing practices that contradict ethical values, such as exaggerated information, manipulated testimonials, non-transparent promotions, and irresponsible use of digital technology. This situation underscores the importance of applying Islamic business ethics as a foundation for developing and implementing marketing strategies in the social media era.
This article was prepared using a library research method with a qualitative approach to analyse the application of Islamic business ethics principles in the marketing strategies of halal MSMEs in the social media era. The results of the discussion show that the application of Islamic business ethical values, such as ṣidq (honesty), amānah (responsibility), ’adl (justice), tablīgh (truthful communication), and faṭānah (wisdom), can increase consumer trust, strengthen customer loyalty, and create business sustainability. In addition, the use of social media accompanied by product information transparency, honesty in promotion, and responsibility towards consumers are important factors in building a positive image for halal MSMEs amidst digital business competition. Thus, a marketing strategy for halal MSMEs based on Islamic business ethics is not only oriented towards increasing profits but also towards creating value of benefit, trust, and business sustainability in accordance with sharia principles.
The development of information and communication technology has brought significant changes to the way business actors conduct their activities. Social media, which initially only functioned as a means of communication, has now developed into an effective marketing tool for various business sectors, including halal Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp Business provide convenience for MSME actors to promote products, reach a wider range of consumers, and build closer relationships with customers. This convenience makes social media one of the important factors in increasing the competitiveness of MSMEs in the digital era.
In Indonesia, MSMEs have a strategic role in driving national economic growth, creating jobs, and improving community welfare. Along with increasing public awareness of halal products, the development opportunities for halal MSMEs are also growing. This condition encourages business actors to utilise social media as the main means of introducing products and expanding market share. However, increasingly fierce competition often drives some business actors to use marketing strategies that pay less attention to ethical aspects, such as conveying exaggerated information, using inauthentic testimonials, misleading promotions, and a lack of transparency regarding product quality and characteristics.
From an Islamic perspective, business activities are not only aimed at obtaining profit but must also be based on moral values and responsibility. Islamic business ethics place the principles of honesty (ṣidq), trustworthiness, justice (’adl), transparency, and social responsibility as the main guidelines in every business activity. The application of these values becomes increasingly important in the social media era because information can spread quickly and affect the level of consumer trust. Therefore, a marketing strategy that prioritises Islamic business ethics is not only able to enhance the positive image of a business but also build long-term relationships with customers and create business sustainability.
Various previous studies have discussed Islamic business ethics and digital marketing strategies separately. However, studies that integrate the application of Islamic business ethics principles with the marketing strategies of halal MSMEs in the social media era still require more comprehensive discussion. In fact, the development of digital technology presents new challenges that require business actors to be able to balance marketing innovation with compliance with sharia values.
Based on this description, this article aims to analyse how the principles of Islamic business ethics can be applied in the marketing strategies of halal MSMEs in the social media era, as well as to identify the challenges faced and provide an overview of marketing strategies that can increase business competitiveness without neglecting the values of honesty, justice, trustworthiness, and public benefit.
The Development of Halal MSMEs and Social Media
Halal MSMEs have an important role in driving Indonesia’s economic growth while meeting the increasing public need for halal products. The development of social media such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp Business provides opportunities for MSME actors to promote products more widely, build communication with consumers, and increase competitiveness at relatively low costs.
On the other hand, increasingly fierce competition drives some business actors to use marketing strategies that pay less attention to ethics, such as providing exaggerated information, using testimonials that do not match the facts, or lacking transparency about products. Such practices can reduce consumer trust and damage business reputation.
Therefore, halal MSMEs need to utilise social media by applying the principles of Islamic business ethics, such as honesty, trustworthiness, and transparency.
