Police have arrested a female Islamic boarding school student identified by the initials HS (18) along with her boyfriend TD (21) after they were suspected of abandoning a baby near a pesantren in Kalukku District, Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi.

"We have detained two individuals suspected of being the parents of the baby. They are HS (18), a boarding school student, and TD (21), who is HS's boyfriend," said the Head of Criminal Investigation at Mamuju Police, AKP Agustinus Pigay, on Friday (20 February).

The case began when the body of a newborn was reported found in Bebangan Village, Kalukku District, on Tuesday (17 February) at approximately 11.30am local time. The baby was believed to have been abandoned in a plantation area beside the rear fence of the Darul Quran Wal Hadits Islamic Boarding School.

Investigators subsequently identified the two suspects believed to be the baby's parents.

"From initial questioning, HS admitted to having had sexual relations with TD on two occasions in the kitchen of her home in Tobadak. The relations occurred around May 2025 and are believed to have resulted in HS's pregnancy," Pigay explained.

According to Pigay, HS gave birth to the child without any medical assistance.

"As a result, HS is currently in a weakened condition and remains under medical care at Bhayangkara Hospital," he said.

Both suspects are currently undergoing intensive questioning to account for their actions.

"For the time being, investigators are still examining the motive and the full chronology of the incident," Pigay concluded.
