Is the Mysterious Aung San Suu Kyi Dead?

The mysterious whereabouts of former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi have raised many questions. Last seen in public attending a court hearing at the end of 2022, Suu Kyi’s current location and condition are completely unknown. Her family, foreign diplomats, and regional leaders, particularly from ASEAN, are collectively demanding proof that the 81-year-old is still alive. However, the ruling junta authorities have repeatedly refused requests to meet with Myanmar’s most prominent political prisoner, despite claims she was transferred to house arrest earlier this year. This has triggered suspicions that Suu Kyi has died. According to a report by The Economist, Suu Kyi has not appeared in public since her trial concluded at the end of 2022, following the 2021 military coup that ousted the civilian government she led. The latest effort was made by Suu Kyi’s youngest son, Kim Aris, who travelled to various countries to urge Myanmar’s military authorities to provide ‘proof that she is still alive’. Kim stated that Suu Kyi’s legal team has not even been granted access to meet her. Myanmar’s military government said in April that Suu Kyi had been moved from prison to house arrest, but they refused requests from foreign diplomats to see her. A recently circulated photo, claimed to show Suu Kyi, has been met with doubt as its authenticity is widely questioned. The lack of independent information regarding Suu Kyi’s condition has fuelled speculation about her health and safety. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who recently declared himself President of Myanmar, reportedly reacted with anger when asked about Suu Kyi by several international figures and leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Special Envoy Julie Bishop. Some observers fear Suu Kyi may be gravely ill or has already died, while others believe she is being held in strict isolation. Regional governments and the UN continue to urge Myanmar’s military authorities to grant access to Suu Kyi. Foreign diplomats say confirmation of her safety, or her release, would be an important step if Myanmar wishes to improve its international image.
